Professional Experience
I graduated magna cum laude from Buffalo Law School in 1999. After graduating from law school I entered private practice until joining the Broome County District Attorney’s Office in 2002. I was promoted to a Senior Assistant District Attorney in 2004. Over the course of my career as a defense attorney and prosecutor I have handled over 40 felony trials. The cases I have taken to trial have included charges such as murder, assault, arson, robbery, grand larceny, burglary, drug possession, drug sales, and DWI. I have successfully tried circumstantial evidence cases and a cold-case homicide. Over the course of 2012 and 2014, I have secured “not guilty” verdicts on harassment, arson, attempted murder, burglary, and sexual assault cases.
In private practice, I am honored to have been recognized as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by The National Trial Lawyers Association (2014). I have also been recognized as one of the Nation's Top One Percent by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel (2014). Through AVVO, an online grading system of attorneys, I have a Superb (10 out of 10) ranking and have received Five Star Ratings by clients. Thanks to my clients, I have received Client's Choice recognition through AVVO in 2013 and 2014.
During my time at the District Attorney’s Office, I served as the co-chairman of the Law Enforcement Sub-Committee of the Weed and Seed Program, I was the Drug Treatment Court prosecutor, chairman of the Child Advocacy Center Review Team and a director of the Broome County Bar Association. I have been an instructor at the local police academy and taught attorneys at accredited continuing legal education programs focused on trial advocacy and evidence. “Mr. Bergman was obviously well prepared for trial. He identified all inconsistencies and made the best use of same during trial... Mr. Bergman was professional and diligent in representing the defendant. He put his client first and aggressively pursued the defendant’s claim of innocence. His professional effort was of the highest caliber.” Those were words written about me by the Honorable Patrick H. Mathews, former Broome County Court Judge. (People v. Julius Hutcherson, Broome County Felony Pleadings 00-608 and 01-394, Decision and Order dated February 8, 2002). And it is those words we aim to live up to in representing clients at Jackson Bergman, LLP.
As a matrimonial and family court attorney, I have handled complex divorce actions, child custody and visitation matters, and child/spousal support cases. In our practice, we provide aggressive representation in dealing with matters of equitable distribution, child custody and visitation, child support, and spousal support. We have represented matrimonial, family and/or support court clients in the counties of Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Seneca, Tioga, and Tompkins.
